The short version
Short answer
Garage door repair in Naperville usually starts with the springs: a standard torsion spring is rated for about 10,000 open-and-close cycles, so a door used four times a day reaches that rating in roughly seven years. We replace springs, cables, rollers and openers, install new doors, and answer the phone 24/7.
If your door is doing one of these, here is the usual fix.
Almost always a broken torsion spring. Leave the opener off; it can strip its gear on the dead weight.
Torsion spring replacementThe photo eyes by the floor are blocked or out of line, so the opener refuses to close.
Fixing the photo eyesA lift cable has slipped off its drum or frayed. Running it this way can bend a section.
Replacing lift cablesUsually a cable slip or a bumper hit. The door must be unloaded before it goes back in.
Off-track door repairA stripped drive gear, a failed capacitor, or a door that has grown too heavy for the motor.
Opener repair optionsThe bottom seal has flattened or torn, letting in cold air, meltwater and mice.
New bottom and side sealsSpring life check
Springs are rated in cycles, not years. One cycle is the door going up once and down once. A standard torsion spring is rated for about 10,000 of them, and high-cycle springs are made in 25,000 and 50,000 ratings and up.
A rating is a design target, not a promise. Heavy doors, dry coils and single-digit January mornings all pull real life below it.
At 4 cycles a day, a 10,000-cycle spring reaches its rating in about 6.8 years.

Local conditions
Naperville roughly tripled between 1980 and 2000, from about 42,600 people to 128,358, and almost a quarter of its homes went up in the 1980s alone. Many of those attached garages are on their second or third set of springs, and plenty still run the original opener.
Winter does the rest. January averages a low of 17F, and cold stiffens grease and spring steel just as the door works hardest. About 30 inches of snow a year becomes salted slush against the bottom section, so rust and torn seals show up first along the floor line.
SGDS 19 works out of an office on Village Green Rd, in a subdivision built between 1978 and 1987, so early-1980s garages are the neighbors we know best. The range runs from late-1950s garages in Moser Highlands to the rebuilds that replaced more than 300 older houses between 2008 and 2017.
The June 2021 tornado damaged around 230 homes on a 16-mile path from Naperville toward Willow Springs. A door that took that wind load can look fine from the curb and still be bowed in its tracks.

Day or night. Tell us what the door is doing and whether a car is trapped or the door is stuck open.
Springs, cables, drums, rollers and opener, because one broken part usually has a worn neighbor.
You get what we found and what it costs before any part goes on the door.
Springs sized to the door's weight, cables wound evenly, hardware tightened, and the opener's force and travel reset.
A balance test, the photo eyes and the safety reverse, run in front of you before we leave.
Coverage
Coverage centers on Naperville and runs into the DuPage, Will, Kane and Kendall County suburbs around it. Each page covers the housing and the door problems that come up in that place.
How we work
With the opener disconnected, a balanced door stays put halfway up. If it drops or climbs, the springs are wrong for the door.
When one of a matched pair breaks, the other has the same cycles on it, so we price both and let you choose.
New springs change how hard the opener pushes, so we reset its force and travel limits.
A 2x4 laid flat under the door should make it reverse. We run that test and the photo eyes before we finish.

Answers before you call
We answer the phone 24/7 and schedule from the Village Green Rd office in Naperville. Arrival depends on the day's calls and where you are, so we give you a real window on the phone instead of a promise on a website.
No. An opener is built to guide a balanced door, not to lift its full weight, and running it on a broken spring can strip the gear or bend the top section. Leave the door where it is; pulling the red emergency release on an open door with a broken spring can let it fall.
National cost guides put both torsion springs at about $150 to $350 and both side extension springs at about $120 to $200. Door weight, spring size, a high-cycle upgrade and an after-hours call all move the number, and we give you our price before any work starts.
Naperville's permit guide lists door replacement that changes the size or style of the opening, or a door in a new location, as permit work. A same-size swap in the existing opening generally is not, but widening the opening or changing the framing means planning for a permit.
