When rollers and hinges need replacing
Short answer
Garage door rollers and hinges need replacing when the door grinds, squeals or shakes on every run, rollers wobble or have flat spots, or hinges are cracked or pulling their screws out of the sections. Sealed-bearing nylon rollers run much quieter than plain steel rollers and are the usual upgrade.
The job
Small parts that carry the whole door
Each section of a garage door rides on a pair of rollers and is joined to the next by hinges. A two-car door may have twenty or more rollers and a dozen hinges, and every one of them flexes on every cycle. Over time bearings wear, wheels flatten and hinges crack, and the door starts to grind, rattle and shake.
Replacing them is one of the best values in garage door work. The door runs quieter and smoother, the opener works less, and worn parts are caught before a roller jumps the track or a hinge tears out of a section.

Cost
What moves the price of rollers and hinges
Roller and hinge work is priced to the door: how many parts, which type and what else we find worn. You hear the price before work starts.
- Number of rollers and hinges
- Steel or sealed nylon rollers
- Stripped or torn mounting points
- Track alignment needed
- Bottom brackets and cables if worn
Worn steel rollers
Replacing worn steel rollers
Steel rollers with exposed bearings are common on older doors. Once the bearings dry out and wear, they grind and wobble. We replace them one section at a time with the door secured, keeping the bottom rollers, which sit in the brackets holding cable tension, for last and handling them only with the tension controlled.

Nylon roller upgrade
Upgrading to nylon rollers
Nylon rollers with sealed ball bearings run far quieter than steel rollers and do not need oiling at the wheel. They are the upgrade most people notice, especially with a bedroom above the garage. The roller stem length is matched to the hinges so the door sits correctly in the track.

Cracked center hinges
Replacing cracked center hinges
Center hinges carry the most flex on a sectional door, and they crack first. A cracked hinge lets two sections fold slightly as the door turns into the horizontal track, which pops, binds and eventually damages the steel. We replace cracked hinges and reinforce stripped screw holes so the new hinge holds. Torn steel around a hinge may need a section replaced.
Around Naperville
Original hardware on Naperville doors
Our office is in Village Green, built between 1978 and 1987, and nearby Miledge, on Mill Street south of Ogden Avenue, went up from the late 1970s to the mid 1980s. Doors from that era that are still on their original rollers and hinges have made decades of cycles, which is why a noisy door in either neighborhood usually needs the full set of rollers rather than one or two, and the hinges checked at the same visit.

What you can do and what to leave
Lubrication is homeowner work. The bottom brackets are not.
Fine to do yourself
- Lubricate steel rollers and hinges with garage door lubricant
- Tighten loose hinge screws on the middle sections
- Listen and note which section the noise comes from
- Keep the tracks clean, not greased
Leave to a technician
- Bottom rollers and brackets, which hold cable tension
- Rollers on a door that is out of balance
- Replacing hinges where the steel has torn
- Realigning tracks after a roller jumps out

Questions about garage door roller & hinge replacement
Usually worn rollers and loose or cracked hinges. Sealed nylon rollers and new hinges make most doors much quieter.
For most homes, yes. Sealed-bearing nylon rollers are quieter and need less maintenance. Heavy commercial doors still use steel.
Usually. They have the same wear, and replacing them together gives the quietest result.
The middle rollers can be, carefully. The bottom rollers sit in brackets under cable tension and should be left to a technician.
