What to do when the door comes off its track

Short answer

An off-track garage door should not be run or forced: with rollers out of the track, the door's weight and the spring tension are no longer controlled, and one more cycle can bend sections or drop the door. Unplug the opener, keep people and cars clear, and call; we secure the door before putting anything back.

Warning signs

Signs a door is coming off its track

Rollers riding on the edge of the track

The track has spread or bent, and the roller is about to slip out.

The door hangs crooked in the opening

One side has dropped, usually from a cable slip or an off-track roller.

A gap opens between the door and the track

The track is loose from its brackets or bent outward.

A slack cable on one side

A cable off its drum lets one side fall and pulls the rollers out.

A new scrape or bang on every run

Rollers catching on a bent section of track.

The job

Why doors leave their tracks

A sectional door rides on rollers inside two vertical and two horizontal tracks. It stays there as long as the tracks are straight, tight and parallel, and both cables lift both sides evenly. Doors come off when one of those stops being true: a bumper hits the door or a track, a cable slips off its drum, a roller breaks, or the tracks loosen and spread.

Putting the rollers back is the easy part. The real repair is the cause. If a cable slipped, it will slip again without new cables or a reset drum. If the track is bent, it will throw the door again. We fix both, then run the door through full cycles before we call it done.

Roller popped out of the track

When a roller pops out of the track

A single roller out of the track is the mildest version, often from a worn roller that has lost its shape or a track joint that has opened slightly. We secure the door, ease the roller back in, replace worn rollers on that side, and tighten the track brackets. Worn rollers elsewhere on the door are worth replacing in the same visit; see roller and hinge replacement.

Bent vertical track

Straightening or replacing a bent vertical track

A bent track is usually a car or a mower that met the door frame. Small bends can be straightened, but a kinked track is replaced, because a weakened track will bend again under the door's weight. We release the load before working on the track, set the new one plumb and at the right distance from the door, and re-tighten every bracket to solid framing.

When the door hangs crooked after a cable slip

If one side of the door sits lower than the other, a lift cable has usually come off its drum. The side that dropped pulls its rollers out of the track as it goes. This one needs care, because the spring is still wound. We clamp the door, take the tension off safely, re-seat or replace the cables, and rebalance the door.

Time

How long an off-track repair takes

A roller back in the track with new rollers is usually a single visit. A bent track section or a cable that needs replacing adds time but is still typically done on the same visit if the parts are standard. If sections were bent badly enough to need replacing, we secure the door first and order the sections.

Around Naperville

Wind, impacts and off-track doors around Naperville

Wind can push a closed door hard enough to bow it out of its tracks. On June 20, 2021, the EF-3 tornado that tracked about 16 miles from Naperville toward Willow Springs damaged around 230 homes, and an EF-0 with 85 mph winds crossed from Plainfield into southwest Romeoville the same night. Most off-track calls come from smaller causes, but after any strong storm a door that suddenly scrapes is worth a look.

Cost

How it is pricedAt the door

Off-track repairs range from rollers and an adjustment to new track and cables. We price the job once the door is secured and we can see the cause.

  • Cables or drums damaged in the slip

  • Door size and weight
