What counts as a garage door emergency
Short answer
A garage door emergency is any failure that leaves the house open, a car trapped, or the door's weight uncontrolled: a door stuck open, a broken spring with the door up, a cable that has let one side drop, or a door off its tracks. We answer 24/7, secure the door first, then repair it or close it safely.
Warning signs
Call right away if
The door is stuck open
The house is exposed and the door may be hanging on damaged parts.
A spring broke with the door up
The door's weight is no longer controlled and it can drop.
One side has dropped
A cable has slipped or snapped; the door can fall out of the track.
The door is out of its track
Rollers out of the track leave the door unstable.
The door is frozen to the floor
Forcing it can tear the seal or strain the opener and springs.
The job
What we do first on an emergency call
Every emergency call starts with making the door safe. A door with a broken spring or cable is carrying its weight on parts not meant to hold it, and a door off its track can swing or drop. We clamp it, take the load off where needed, and only then work on the repair.
Most emergencies are fixed on the same visit: springs, cables, rollers and photo eyes are carried parts for us. When a part has to be ordered, we close and secure the door so the house is not left open, and come back to finish.
Door stuck open overnight
Door stuck open overnight
A door that will not close at night leaves the house open. The cause is often a broken spring, a slipped cable or photo eyes that will not let the opener close. We secure the door, then repair the cause; if the fix needs a part, we close and lock the door safely until we return.

Car trapped inside
Car trapped inside
A broken spring on a closed door is the classic cause of a trapped car: the door is too heavy to lift by hand or by opener. We replace the spring so the door works again rather than propping it open. Never try to prop a door with a broken spring open on a ladder or a car roof. Spring work is covered on our torsion spring replacement page.

Door frozen to the floor
Door frozen to the floor
In a deep freeze, meltwater under the bottom seal can freeze the door to the slab. Running the opener against it can tear the seal, strain the springs or trip the opener. We free the door without forcing it, check the seal and the opener's settings, and replace a torn bottom seal so it does not refreeze the same way.
Time
How long an emergency visit takes
Securing the door comes first and is quick. Most emergency repairs, springs, cables, rollers and photo eyes, are finished on the same visit. If a part must be ordered, the door is left closed and secure until we return.

Stuck open, stuck shut or hanging crooked: call, and the door gets secured first.

Around Naperville
Emergency calls across Naperville
Naperville spans two counties, DuPage and Will, and emergency calls come from both ends of the city at any hour. Storms add to the load: the June 2021 tornado damaged around 230 homes on its path from Naperville toward Willow Springs. Most emergencies are quieter than that, a spring that lets go before dawn or a door that will not close at night, and the first step is always the same: make the door safe.
