Repair the opener or replace it?

Short answer

Most garage door opener repairs come down to a stripped drive gear, a failed capacitor, a bad logic board or drifted travel limits, and national cost guides put opener repair at about $100 to $500. Before touching the opener, we test the door by hand, because an opener that strains is often fighting a broken spring rather than failing itself.

Warning signs

Signs the opener itself is the problem

It hums but the door does not move

The motor runs, but a stripped gear or failed capacitor means nothing reaches the rail.

It clicks and does nothing

Often the capacitor or the logic board, sometimes a dead wall-button circuit.

The trolley moves but the door does not

The door is disconnected from the trolley or the trolley is broken.

It stops partway every time

Travel limits have drifted or the force setting trips on a heavy door.

Remotes work sometimes, not always

A failing receiver, dead batteries or interference near the antenna.

The job

How an opener fails, and how we find out

An opener is a motor, a gear, a trolley on a rail and a small computer that sets how far and how hard the door moves. Each part fails in its own way. The motor can run while a plastic gear inside has worn smooth. The logic board can lose its limits. A capacitor can fail and leave the motor humming but unable to start.

The door has to be ruled out first. With the opener disconnected, a balanced door stays put halfway up. If it does not, the opener has been lifting dead weight, and repairing it without fixing the springs only sets up the next failure.

Motor hums but the door will not move

When the motor hums but the door will not move

A hum with no movement usually means power reaches the motor but it cannot turn the drive. On many chain and belt openers the start capacitor is the cheap culprit. If the motor turns but the trolley does not, the drive gear inside has stripped. Both are repairable on an opener with years left in it. On a very old unit we price the repair next to a new opener so you can choose.

Stripped drive gear

Replacing a stripped drive gear

The main gear in many residential openers is nylon, built to strip before something more expensive breaks. It wears faster when the door is heavy or the opener's force is set too high. Replacing it means opening the housing, swapping the gear and sprocket, and resetting the limits, and it is worth doing only when the door is balanced and the motor is sound.

Logic board or travel limits

Logic board and travel limit problems

If the door stops short, reverses at the floor or will not respond to the wall button, the logic board or its limit settings are the usual suspects. Limits drift over time and after power surges. Some boards can be reset; others need replacing. We check the wiring and wall button too, because a chewed or pinched wire can look just like a failed board.

Around Naperville

Cold mornings and Naperville openers

January is Naperville's coldest month, with an average low of 17F, and in deep snaps like January 2014, which averaged a low of about 6F, grease in the rail and gear stiffens and the door gets harder to move. An opener that has been compensating for a worn spring or a tired gear for months is the one that quits on that morning, so cold-weather calls are where we check the door and the opener together.

Do it yourself or call

What you can try before calling

Some opener problems are simple. The ones involving the door's weight are not.

Fine to do yourself

  • Check the outlet and the breaker for the opener
  • Replace remote and keypad batteries
  • Make sure the lock button on the wall control is off
  • Clean the photo eye lenses and check their lights

Leave to a technician

  • Opening the opener housing near live wiring
  • Replacing gears, capacitors or logic boards
  • Adjusting force on a door that may be out of balance
  • Anything involving the springs or cables
